This Friday we attended a workshop with our home schooling group on Aboriginal Experiences. This is something I have been hoping to do for a while. This workshop was everything I had hoped for and more. We will definitely be coming back when Maya is older and able to fully comprehend the truth of the Aboriginal and human experience. We are a species capable of so much oppression and contempt. But we are also fierce and resilient. The aboriginal story is tucked away and steeped in misinformation and misrepresentation to this day. I had no idea that Iroquois was a derogatory term coined by the French meaning "sneaky". The tribe is actually called Haudenosaunee meaning "people of the long house". Maya's favourite part was the pow wow and learning and exploring the different homes (wigwam, tepee and longhouses). I encourage you all to visit Victoria Island and organize a workshop.
